The NASA/JPL's NDE and
Advanced Actuators (NDEAA) Laboratory was established
in May 1991 by Dr. Yoseph Bar-Cohen. This lab is involved
with innovation and technology transfer to space, medical
and other fields. The lab conducts research and development
of innovative NDE methods, transducers, sensors, actuators,
and robotic mechanisms. This effort involves technical cooperation
with scientists and engineers at various universities, research
institutes, medical centers and industry both U.S. and international.
The developed mechanisms are driven by elastic waves, mechanical
vibrations and/or electroactive materials. Other technologies
that are being explored include Haptic interfaces for robotics
and Human Muscle Enhancers -- high power ultrasound for cancer
screening and orthopedic treatment ferroelectric source that
generates various radiations and charged particles -- and
geophysical probing using elastic waves. In addition to planetary
applications, these devices and mechanisms have potential
terrestrial applications, e.g., military, medical, commercial,
etc. |
